Progress is typically made one step at a time unless there is a radical change or disruption that results in improvements that come in leaps and bounds.

Radical Changes are much rarer, so lean innovation. Small and consistent improvement over time, is critical to competitiveness and even survival in between the radical changes. Lean innovation can be described as incremental improvements through standardization, training, selecting the right tools/equipment for the task, etc.
