Self Healing Concrete. Concrete is one of the most common construction materials used because it provides so many benefits. However there are some set-backs when concrete is utilized in the construction process. One being that concrete will always crack.
These cracks can lead to overall failure of a structure as cracks allow water to directly erode reinforcing steel.
There is an interesting solution Self Healing concrete. Concrete embedded with bacteria, activated by water exposure and close cracks. This can be a huge development in the ability to prolong the life-cycle of concrete structures.
Do the bacteria eventually causing permanent cracks? If so, approximately how long does the “healing” process continue?
The bacteria are not activated until cracks form and water pools in the cracks are what they are saying but there is not much information on the amount of testing to see if the bacteria actually contribute to the cracking.
